Lucio Del Pezzo (Napoli, 1933) è un artista, pittore e scultore italiano. Uno dei fondatori del Gruppo 58 di Napoli, d’impostazione neosurrealista e neodadaista, ha inoltre collaborato alla rivista Documento Sud. Le sue opere del periodo 1958-1960 proponevano assemblaggi di vari oggetti, tra cui frammenti di stampe e immagini popolari. Nel 1960 si trasferì a Parigi, poi a Milano, dove gli sono state dedicate diverse mostre monografiche (nel 1974 la prima). A partire dal 1962 Del Pezzo ha realizzato un suo tipico repertorio di “quadri” o “sculture”, formati da pannelli geometrici monocromi, sui quali sono iserite mensole o scavate concavità, che sostengono oggetti geometrici regolari (birilli, uova di legno, bocce, manichini, etc.) a volte molto colorati. Nelle sue pitture-oggetto e nei suoi assemblages è sempre presente l’aspetto ludico. Per il tono ironico e per l’utilizzo di oggetti d’uso quotidiano decontestualizzati, tali opere rimandano alla Pop Art; ma si riscontra un evidente recupero di De Chirico, Carrà e Morandi (Motivo, 1967), e delle geometrie della pittura metafisica.

He studied art history and archaeology and, in 1954, he was awarded a bursary to go to Greece to continue his archaeological studies. In 1955 he graduated in applied arts and studied painting at the fine arts academy in Naples. In the same year he held his first solo show in Padua.
Together with other artists dissatisfied with abstraction and interested in a new kind of figuration, he founded Gruppo 58; the group was intended to relate to both national and international culture and, in fact, it had links with the Movimento Nucleare in Milan, the Phases group in Paris, and with other organizations.
In 1960 he moved to Milan where he held a solo show in the Schwarz gallery; the following year he held his first solo show in New York, when he also won the Carnegie International Award.
In 1964 he exhibited at the Milan Triennial and the Venice Biennale, to which he was again invited in 1966. In 1965 he began a long-term relationship with Studio Marconi gallery in Milan which, in fact, opened its activities with a solo show of his work.
Towards the end of the 1960s he began to construct his “Visual Boxes” in which he placed solid wooden geometrical shapes, similar in feeling to works being made by Joe Tilson. However, the main difference between the two artists is that Del Pezzo has continued to place metaphysical art at the center of his interests.
After a long period spent in Paris, he returned to Italy in 1977, when he also began to be interested in stage design. In 2001 he created four ceramic reliefs for the new Neapolitan subway.
Among his later shows mention should be made of his exhibitions in Moscow in 1988 and at the Casa del Mantegna in 1994; the large-scale retrospective at the Institut Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt in 2000; an anthological show at the Castel dell’Ovo, Naples, in 2001; and a further anthological show in Palazzo Doria, Loana, in 2007.
His works are to be found in many national and international private and public collections.
